What to Expect From a New Roof Installation

Did you know the most common types of roofing systems can last 20 to 50 years? The amount of time you can expect yours to last, however, will largely depend on the kind of roofing system you get, how well you take care of it, and, most importantly, how well it was installed. Here’s what you can expect to happen during a new roof installation.

What Can I Expect From a New Roof Installation?

So, you’ve called some roofing companies for at-home consultations, got quotes for the project, and chosen a company that resonated with you and suits your needs. Now that the groundwork is done, you should learn about what all is involved in a new roof installation.

There are a few things every reputable roofing contractor should do:

  • Set an installation date: The roofing installer will work with you to set a mutually agreeable date to install your new roofing system. While you don’t have to be at home while the installers work, you should stay on top of what’s happening. That’ll allow you to ask any questions you might have.
  • Remove the old roofing system: Before installing a new roof, the installers will have to remove the old roofing system. It can take one or more days for the crew to remove the old materials so that the new materials can be applied. The amount of time it takes will depend on factors like the size of your roof and how many installers are there to help remove the old roofing system.
  • Install your new roofing system: The crew at the roofing company will spend several days installing the roofing system after the old one is removed. How long does roof installation take? The size of your roof, the number of installers working on the job, and the weather all factor into how long the project will take. But it could be a few days to a week. After the roofing contractor visits your home and assesses your roof, they will give you an estimate for how long the new roof installation will take to complete.
  • Clean up before leaving your property: After the installation crew has wrapped up the project, they will let you know so you can take a look. They will also clean up any mess from during the removal and installation so that you’re not left with any cleanup duties.

While there are things the roofing company needs to do, there are also things you need to do as the homeowner to prepare for your new roof installation.
Below are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • Get your cars out of the way: If you have vehicles, make sure they’re out of the way when the roof installers arrive at your home. Parking them in the garage is not enough since you might not be able to easily get in and out of your garage if the roofers are removing old material and throwing it into the dumpster. It’s best to park far from your home, such as on the street or in a neighbor’s driveway.
  • Watch your kids and pets: Make sure your kids and pets are somewhere safe and not wandering around when the crew installs your roof. Having roofing material thrown from the roof to the ground can be dangerous for anyone below. Keeping your little ones and fur babies indoors is absolutely important both for their own safety and the workers’ safety as well. It also removes the potential of them getting in the way and slowing down the workers’ progress.
  • Cut your grass ahead of time: Before getting your new roof installed, cut your lawn. This isn’t about aesthetics. Even though roofers take measures to keep nails, old roofing materials, and other things from getting onto the lawn, that doesn’t mean that mistakes can’t happen. If your grass is cut low, you’ll more readily identify things that bypass the tarp and get onto your lawn.
  • Prep for bad weather and take furniture inside: Is your lawn equipment on the grass? Do you have outdoor furniture on the patio deck? Whatever you have around your home should be put away before the installers arrive. Clutter can be dangerous since it can present tripping hazards, and it might also slow down the workers. Putting things away in your garage or garden shed will also protect your possessions from damage and Florida’s heavy storms.

Most days, Florida weather is wonderful. The summers are warm and bright, and the winters are mild. Although these qualities make Florida a great place to live and vacation, they can also create quite a number of problems for your roof.
